Best of Batman

In the mood for some Batman? Check out all of our Batman graphic novels!

As the Crow Flies
Gotham City's underworld is thrown into turmoil as its crime lords slip into a rabid - and murderous - frenzy. Is it a coincidence, or part of an elaborate and sinister power play? One thing's for sure: The machinations of the Scarecrow and the Penguin will have Batman hard-pressed to restore order. Worse, Batman may have met his match in the vicious Scarebeast!

Batman and the Mad Monk
Writer/artist Matt Wagner pulls back the curtain on the earliest adventures of Batman in this blood-curdling sequel to Batman and the Monster Men! In this dark, moody tale, the young Dark Knight learns that there are more twisted faces of evil than those worn by the street criminals and mobsters of Gotham City. Now, Batman must counter sinister machinations and new dimensions of wickedness as he confronts the hooded menace of the Mad Monk!

Batman and the Monster Men
Batman has spent his first year fighting organized crime — but nothing thus far in his early career as the Caped Crusader has prepared him for the new menace facing Gotham: super-powered villains!

Blind Justice
When Bruce Wayne refuses to allow illegal mindcontrol experiments to continue at Wayne Technology, he finds himself charged with being a traitor. During the police investigation, Wayne is forced to confront memories of the various people who trained him to become the feared Dark Knight. Wayne not only must clear himself, but also protect his secret and save his company from ruin.

Bloodstorm
Prowling the city's darkest corners, the Batman seeks to destroy an army of vampires before they can feast upon the innocent... and before he himself succumbs to the terrible thirst for human blood.

Cataclysm
It's the end of Gotham City as we know it as a devastating earthquake strikes! In the aftermath of the quake, Wayne Manor has collapsed into the Batcave, the criminal residents of Blackgate Prison make a daring escape, and countless innocents are caught in the chaos of a city out of control. Can Batman hope to restore order, even with the help of Robin, Nightwing, Catwoman, and others?

Dark Knight Returns
The Batman has not been seen in ten years, some now consider him more myth than reality, but crime and violence have continued in Gotham City. Bruce Wayne had reached a point in his life where he can no longer silence the voice of his vigilante side aching to break free. The Dark Knight must return!

Dark Knight Strikes Again
Written as a sequel to the groundbreaking Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, this masterly hardcover takes place three years after Batman's defeat of Superman.

Dark Victory (sequel to the Long Halloween)
Batman: Dark Victory showcases some of Batman's deadliest foes, including Poison lvy, Mr. Freeze and the Joker, and introduces Batman's most trusted ally, Robin. As Gotham completes its journey from a city run by organized crime to one run by lawless freaks, the Dark Knight completes his transformation into the city's greatest defender while facing multiple threats, including the seeming return of a serial killer called Holiday. Batman's previous investigation of Holiday's killings revealed that more than one person was responsible for the murders. So the question remains, who is committing Holiday's crimes this time? And how many will die before Batman learns the truth?

Death and the City
The madcap super-villain duo of Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy plans to take down Batman once and for all in this uproariously funny volume featuring a fantastic three-chapter story written by Paul Dini and illustrated by Bruce Timm, the award-winning producers of "Batman: The Animated Series," plus a story by superstar talents Judd Winick and Joe Chiodo.

Enemies Among Us (Batman/Superman)
When Batman is attacked be one of his oldest and most powerful allies, Martian Manhunter, he seeks the aid of Superman. Soon Batman and Superman are ambushed by various off-worlders, both friend and foe. The madness spreads and Batman finds he must defeat Superman to save the human race.

Haunted Knight
This graphic novel includes three dark tales of horror and intrigue featuring Batman facing off against his most demented and wicked foes. Taking place on the most evil of holidays, Halloween, the Darknight Detective confronts his deepest fears as he tries to stop the madness and horror created by Scarecrow, the Mad Hatter, the Penguin, Poison Ivy and the Joker.

Hong Kong
Written by Batman scribe Doug Moench and drawn by legendary Hong Kong artist Tony Wong, this exceptional collaboration blends storytelling techniques from the East and West to create a truly unique adventure. When a serial killer begins to use a streaming video computer cam to broadcast his vicious executions, Batman must travel to Hong Kong to put an end to the brutal slayings. But when the Dark Knight Detective gets caught in the middle of a Cain and Abel feud between the Hong Kong police chief and the leader of the local triads, his only hope may rest in the hands of the mysterious Night Dragon, Hong Kong's native super-hero.

Hush volume 2
An unknown foe continues to manipulate and train the Dark Knight's deadliest enemies to attack Batman, Robin, and Nightwing, both physically and mentally. But it's not until Batman learns his mysterious assailant's true identity that he suffers his greatest defeat and betrayal.

Hush Returns
Witness the return of Batman's deadliest new enemy in this volume collecting #50-55 and #66. Hush's unexpected reappearance raises more questions about his true identity, origins and motivations.

Killing Joke
The Killing Joke, one of my favorite Batman stories ever, stirred a bit of controversy because the story involves the Joker brutally, pointlessly shooting Commissioner Gordon's daughter in the spine. This is a no-holds-barred take on a truly insane criminal mind, masterfully written by British comics writer Alan Moore.

Long Halloween
This stunning and stylish tale from the early days of Batman's career focuses on a serial killer named Holiday who kills once a month, only on holidays, and recounts the origin of Two-Face. As the Dark Knight struggles to find the elusive Holiday, he discovers no shortage of suspects, including Catwoman, the Joker, Poison Ivy, and the Riddler.

No Man's Land volumes 1 - 5
An earthquake has ravaged Gotham City! Federal authorities have declared the city uninhabitable, leaving it isolated from the outside world. Can Batman restore order to this No Man's Land, populated by the downtrodden and hopeless? This trade paperback features the introduction of a new Batgirl along with the Huntress, the Scarecrow, and others.

Secrets
Following his parole, the Joker commits a heinous crime and frames Batman for it. Batman must clear his name by proving the villain's guilt, but his job is complicated when the Joker threatens someone from Bruce Wayne's past.

Showcase Presents: Batman volumes one, two & three
The spotlight's on Batman in this volume featuring Detective Comics #327-342 and Batman #164-174! The Dynamic Duo take on some of their most enduring Rogues Gallery members, including Penguin, the Riddler, and the Outsider in these classic Silver Age stories from the era of famed editor Julius Schwartz!

Strange Apparitions
Batman: Strange Apparitions collects the late '70s stories that were monumental in elevating Batman from super hero to cultural icon. Considered the definitive Batman tales, this book transforms the Caped Crusader into a three-dimensional character who is as much adventurer as detective. Featuring bold and rich portrayals of the Joker, Clayface, Hugo Strange and the Penguin, this book also includes Bruce Wayne's love affair with Silver St. Cloud and her astonishing discovery of his alter ego. These stories and character interpretations are the foundation upon which Batman's current mythos was built.

Jake Reinvented by Gordon Korman

Gordon Korman is one of my favorite young adult writers, particularly when I'm looking for a book that will make me laugh. This one, while it has its funny moments, is one that tackles subjects like peer acceptance in a retelling of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic The Great Gatsby. The new kid, Jake Garrett, is an instant hit with the in-crowd at his new high school. Each weekend brings another blowout party at Jake's house and a new crop of followers. But then Jake starts to snag the star football player's girlfriend and suspicions about his worthiness and past begin to form. When his past as a serious geek is uncovered, what will his new friends do? How far would you go to get the girl or guy of your dreams? How far would you go to defend a friend?

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart

After passing a series of mind-bending tests, four children are selected for a secret mission that requires them to go undercover at the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened, where the only rule is that there are no rules.

This is a J Fiction book, but if you like bizarre stories that contain elements like orphans, quirky and strange characters, mind control, the power of media, subliminal messages, strange buildings, and mental challenges, you'll love this one! If you liked reading Roald Dahl books( like The BFG), the Harry Potter series or Blue Balliett books (Chasing Vermeer) , this just might be another one for you. Not to mention the very cool art by Carson Ellis (who also does the artwork for the Portland indie band The Decemberists).

Edited by underground comics icon Ariel Schrag, this anthology of illustrated tales about the agonies and triumphs of seventh and eight grade features some of Americas leading graphic novelists, including Daniel Clowes, Joe Matt, Lauren Weinstein, and Ariel herself. With a sense of humor as refreshing as it is bitingly honest, seventeen artists share their stories of first love, bullying, zits, and all the things that make middle school the worst years of our lives.

Translucent by Kazuhiro Okamoto
Teen-centric, quirky and romantic, Translucent will appeal to shojo fans who like a little twist with their gakuen mono! Shizuka is an introverted girl, dealing with schoolwork, boys, and a medical condition that begins to turn her invisible! She finds support with Mamoru, a boy who is falling for Shizuka despite her condition, and with Keiko, another girl who suffers from this illness and has finally turned completely invisible. The mysterious disease that these teens struggle with becomes a metaphor in the ordinary lives of the students in their classes, as they try to work their way through their friendships and romances. Writer and artist Kazuhiro Okamoto knows how important surfaces are to people, especially at such a pivotal time in one's life - when dreams are meant to be chased, despite all hurdles. Translucent's shifting variables between what people can see, what people think they see, and what people wish to see in themselves and others makes for an emotionally sensitive manga, peppered with moments of surprising humor, heartbreak and drama.
