Between the wildly inflated ego of the expert escorts and the potential calamities of constant cross dressing, Haruhi's freshman year looks like it will be one to remember.

Brilliant and Disturbing: Unwind by Neal Shusterman

Unwind is the best teen book I've read in years - even better than all those vampire books I love so much! Why is it so good? It gets inside your head and completely and totally creeps you out.

Imagine you live in a society where your parents or guardians can decide to "unwind" you . . . which means send you off to a camp where every inch of your body will be harvested as an organ donation. It's not murder, as technically you're still alive. And did I mention you're kept conscious for the entire unwinding?

Who gets unwound? Probably just troubled and unwanted kids, right? But what if you and your parents are fighting over ordinary things like grades, curfew, the clothes you wear, the person you're dating? Would your parents decide that enough is enough and ship you off to be unwound?

Ursula
Once upon a time, there was a story. A love story. Different listeners will hear different things from the love story; for some, it might be a tale of journeys and rites of passage and battles won and foes vanquished and happily-ever-after. For other listeners, it might be a story about dreams and desires, for all is simple, beautiful and magical when you're young and in love. But once upon a time . . . there was a story, and listen to me now: it was a love story.

Basketball Season

Game by Walter Dean Myers (YA Fiction)

Drew Lawson knows basketball is taking him places. It has to, because his grades certainly aren't. But lately his plan has run squarely into a pick. Coach's new offense has made another player a star, and Drew won't let anyone disrespect his game. Just as his team makes the playoffs, Drew must come up with something big to save his fading college prospects. It's all up to Drew to find out just how deep his game really is.

King James: Believe the Hype, the LeBron James Story by Ryan Jones (Adult Nonfiction)

Ryan Jones, an editor at SLAM, a basketball magazine details a fascinating look at one of the best basketball players ever. This is the proof that, yes, he was always that good - even in high school. For more coverage of the star, see the book below.

The Rise of a Star: LeBron James by David Lee Morgan (Adult Nonfiction)

"He was featured on the covers of both Sports Illustrated and ESPN The Magazine. He has the scouts of every pro basketball team drooling. He has been touted wildly on national TV by basketball experts from Dick Vitale to Bill Walton. He has a reported $20 million dollar shoe contract pending.

And he's still in high school. Why the big deal about LeBron James? The odds were against LeBron from the start. Born in poverty to a 16-year-old, drug-addicted single mom, without a father, raised by various family and neighbors . . . he could have become just another scarred product of a rough childhood in the projects. Instead, he's the darling of the sports world--and he plays the part well. Sportswriter David Lee Morgan has covered the LeBron phenomenon for the Akron Beacon Journal since the kid's freshman year and has been granted unequaled access to LeBron, his family, and his close friends. He's seen the exceptional play on the basketball court. But he's also seen how surprisingly well LeBron has handled the pressure, the scrutiny, the criticism that arrived with the early onset of stardom. (Just imagine how most of us would have handled that as a teenager!) An unusual inside look at the rise of sport's hottest young prospect, now poised at the brink of superstardom." Greatest Stars of the NBA: Shaquille O'Neal by Jon Finkel (J Graphic Novel)

This graphic novel series by Tokyopop is a cine-manga style look at some of the greatest basketball stars in NBA history. This series shows the stars' signature moves and plays and chronicles their career in basketball. Check out other titles about Jason Kidd, Kevin Garnett, and Tim Duncan. Additional titles are devoted to Future Stars and All-Time Dunks.
